Empowering Communities through Climate-Resilient Horticulture in Kidai and Mwanabwito Sub-Villages, Kibaha District Council

The Community Empowerment Through Horticulture Project, launched on November 27, 2024, in Kibaha District, represents a strategic effort to address household income challenges, enhance food security, and combat climate change. Funded by the U.S. Embassy in Tanzania and implemented by the ANJITA Child Development Foundation in collaboration with the Kibaha District Council, the initiative targets Kikongo Ward—specifically Kidai and Mwanabwito sub-villages—to promote climate-smart horticulture as a pathway to sustainable livelihoods.

With an investment of TZS 10,850,000/= in agricultural inputs, the project supports 10 groups, each comprising 6 to 7 members, by providing Agricultural inputs, tools, equipments and knowledge for adopting resilient horticulture practices. These practices emphasize water-efficient techniques, organic fertilizers, and adaptive crop selection. The Kibaha District Council has committed to training farmers through Agriculture Extension and Business Officers to enhance productivity while reducing vulnerabilities to poverty and climate shocks.

“This initiative integrates economic empowerment with climate change mitigation by promoting sustainable horticulture practices that improve resilience and nutrition,” stated Mrs. Evelyne Ngwira, the Guest of Honor and District Agriculture, Pastoralism, and Fishery Officer for Kibaha District Council.

The project prioritizes inclusivity, engaging vulnerable populations and fostering self-sustainability through community ownership. It also emphasizes market linkage strategies to ensure long-term viability and poverty reduction in the target areas.
